Whale Watching

Mirissa is the famous launching point for blue whale excursions. The blue whales are known to be resident in the waters here as they have the all-year round luxury of both warm shallow waters for breeding and nearby access to the cold and very deep waters off the continental shelf that brings bountiful food and nutrients.

For this reason, whale watching tours run almost all-year, with the exception of June/July when the sea conditions are not favourable. Other species such as the fin whale, the sperm whale, bryde’s whale and killer whales can be seen, along with another 20 or more species that have been sighted in the waters of Sri Lanka.

The chance of seeing whales does not vary greatly from month-to-month (remaining above 85%) but the sea conditions tend to be more choppy between May and November. Seeing these marine mammals in the wild can be a majestic experience. Their sheer size alone is breath-taking. Passengers often also see large schools of spinner dolphins, other breeds of whales and turtles. Tours last between 3-6 hours and depart at 6:30am. Tickets are between $50-54/pp.
